Naturalperl participants got great photo opportunities to photograph both landscape and wildlife at Bosque del Apache NWR, which is one of the best places to photograph snow geese and sandhill cranes during winter time. Last year we got cold, but clear sky during dawn. In December 2006, we got cold rainy and snowy weather, and most of the dawns were foggy and cloudy, so we just dreamed about the colorful sunrise.

On our Naturalperl fall trips to Wichita Mountains NWR, OK, we always look for dramatic, colorful sky after sunset. This typical western orange painted sky  gave a great backdrop for our landscapes taken at Caddo Lake. This area is open after sunset, so we were able to get the best light of afterglow. We had to leave at sunset from other great locations, such as Sunset Lake, or  the Wilderness area.

Exploring and photographing in Yellowstone NP Wyoming, is always rewarding. We searched for small roads and hidden trails to stay far from people, got up early and visited one or two scenic area when the light was special. One of the mornings at Lake Yellowstone surprised us with heavy fog, and the rising sun made special light effects there.  After stopping at the Lower and Midway Geyser Basins we looked around the Upper Geyser Basin, and enjoyed the eruption of the Geysers.

This late afternoon photograph, was taken at Lake Yellowstone, where the Yellowstone river expands to a small lake. This is one of the most photographed area and good for watching and photographing wildlife, such as bison, black bear, grizzly bear, or elk. If the weather is cooperative, you may get great shots from here at sunset, or at sunrise. Be there early, you may see pink and blue colors.

Time is flying and we have just realized that I already skipped two NaturalperlNews...

The free Photo walks at Brazos Bend State Park were on April 5, 2008 for Spider Lilies of the swampy area of the prairie, then on May 10, 2008 for wading birds of Elm Lake and Pilant Slough, and then on June 21, 2008 for plant close-ups. The weather was very hot, but we still found few interesting small things to photograph and enjoyed the outing. Laszlo continued to collect more soft focus images to his Nature Softies portfolio and worked on our Good friend Dion McInnis inspired “Wabi-Sabi” project. On July 5, 2008 Laszlo will be at the Nature Center to guide the visitors from 3-5 PM and after that as a 2nd part of the close-up walk, we will look for Passion Flowers, probably nearby the Prairie, back side of the overflow camping area. We may get some nice sunset shots too and will return to the parking area at dusk. Please bring your macro-, wide angle-, or telephoto lenses with extension tubes and a solid tripod. More info about Photowalks at Brazos Bend State Park: http://www.brazosbend.org/calendar/photowalk1.htm

We had a great time during our invitational Naturalperl exploratory workshop series photographing nesting brown pelicans, white ibises, terns, laughing gulls, oystercatchers, tricolored herons, snowy egrets and little blue herons. We had total of four outings with Captain Mike’s fishing boat to a no-name oyster shell Island in the West Bay, where we photographed the colony nesting bird behavior. We discussed the recorded images and compiled the observations on our two discussion meetings.
