Naturalperl participants got great photo opportunities to photograph both landscape and wildlife at Bosque del Apache NWR, which is one of the best places to photograph snow geese and sandhill cranes during winter time. Last year we got cold, but clear sky during dawn. In December 2006, we got cold rainy and snowy weather, and most of the dawns were foggy and cloudy, so we just dreamed about the colorful sunrise.

On our Naturalperl fall trips to Wichita Mountains NWR, OK, we always look for dramatic, colorful sky after sunset. This typical western orange painted sky gave a great backdrop for our landscapes taken at Caddo Lake. This area is open after sunset, so we were able to get the best light of afterglow. We had to leave at sunset from other great locations, such as Sunset Lake, or the Wilderness area.

Exploring and photographing in Yellowstone NP Wyoming, is always rewarding. We searched for small roads and hidden trails to stay far from people, got up early and visited one or two scenic area when the light was special. One of the mornings at Lake Yellowstone surprised us with heavy fog, and the rising sun made special light effects there. After stopping at the Lower and Midway Geyser Basins we looked around the Upper Geyser Basin, and enjoyed the eruption of the Geysers.

This late afternoon photograph, was taken at Lake Yellowstone, where the Yellowstone river expands to a small lake. This is one of the most photographed area and good for watching and photographing wildlife, such as bison, black bear, grizzly bear, or elk. If the weather is cooperative, you may get great shots from here at sunset, or at sunrise. Be there early, you may see pink and blue colors.

Thanks for the hard work of the volunteers at the Saint Luke’s Episcopal Hospital Auxiliary; they did a great job with both the contest and exhibition. We did not expect huge buying activity at Bayou City Art Festival Downtown Houston, but finally we were happy with our sales on October 18 – 19, 2008. The great weather took thousands of people there and our booth was always full with visitors. We received very good feedbacks, had lot of discussions with art collectors and other photographic artists. However, much less people bought art works in this year than in previous years. This was the general opinion of most of the artists. Lexi and Laszlo of Naturalperl together with HPS members Tom Foster, Colin Zelt and Drew Bedo and several other invited photographic artists, exhibited at the Houston Center for Photography’s Annual fund raising print sale on November 1, 2008. The show was well organized, the entire exhibition looked good, but we sold only one print and few of us maybe two, but most of the photographers did not sell any. Brazos Bend SP reopened on October 10, 2008 and all of the scheduled programs are up and running. Laszlo was at the Nature Center on November 8, 2008 from 1 -3 PM and led his free Naturalperl Photo-walk for Landscapes from 3 – 6 PM. We looked around at New Horse shoe and Old Horse shoe Lakes and then we visited the Big Creek area. We photographed there few colorful backlit tree branches and attractive, glowing small fall colored trees. The water level of the Big Creek was low, but that area is always nice. We observed two large alligators cruising in the overflow of the 40 Acre Lake, I just call it New Lake, and the reflections of the fall colored leaves made the photographs pop. The sunset was nice and the afterglow was deep orange. We all were happy to see the light. The next Photo-walk for Landscape will be on Dec. 6, 2008 at 3 PM. Please bring your camera gear and do not forget your solid tripod. More info about Photo walks at Brazos Bend State Park: http://www.brazosbend.org/calendar/photowalk1.htm Please check the Programs of the Houston Center for Photography (HCP), you will find lot of interesting and valuable exhibitions, seminars, workshops, field trips or digital lab classes. Stop by, drink a delicious coffee there and enjoy our pictures. Mark your calendar for the next show: Photographic artist and writer Dion McInnis will open Laszlo’s Wabi-Sabi portfolio exhibition on December 19, 2008. Naturalperl will lead a landscape and wildlife photography workshop at Wichita Mts. NWR, Oklahoma during Thanksgiving holiday. We will have a series of workshops (3 x Sunset workshops and 3 x Sunrise workshops) for capturing the light on film or sensor at the best scenic locations. We will photograph wildlife too, such as prairie dogs, bison, elk, deer, Canada goose and wild turkey in fall colored locations. (This event is sold out!). Naturalperl will lead two more workshops to Wichita Mts. NWR during Spring and Fall of 2009.
